Tricked or Treated

English is a unique language.

We use words that really don't have the meaning we would think if we were new to English.

There is no egg in the eggplant,

No ham in the hamburger,

And neither pine nor apple in the pineapple.

English muffins were not invented in England.

French fries were not invented in France.

We sometimes take English for granted,

But if we examine its paradoxes we find that

Quicksand takes you down slowly,

Boxing rings are square,

And a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.

If a vegetarian eats vegetables,

What in the world does a humanitarian eat!? Humans?

English was invented by people, not computers,

And it reflects the creativity of the human race

(Which of course isn’t a race at all).

Being Christian on Halloween:

This is one of those times were words used together don't mean what some might think.

1. Christians do not practice witchcraft

2. Christians believe in Evil spirits but we don't like them

3. Christians believe the Bible and it says we are not suppose to communicate with the dead.

Halloween makes light of those things, what do we do?

I personally believe Halloween as celebrated today is mostly just an excuse for candy and parties, I don't believe that the majority of people who participate in Halloween are desiring to be part some evil occult that does see these things as something to be sought after.

For the Christian who does participate in Halloween, either by giving out candy or taking your children trick or treating, we simply need to clarify to our children and those we meet that we are not celebrating cult activities nor do we condone them, we are simply enjoying this day as a day of people dressing up into something other than themselves.

Escaping the influences of cultic connections of things becomes all but impossible when even our calendars which have descended from Romes influence on the world is filled with the names of false deities still worshiped by some today. Yet Christians readily use calendars everyday, not because we are worshiping those false gods, but that we in a society where it is commonly used, so we do too.

It becomes impossible for Christians to separate from everything that has some basis in cults or false gods, it is interwoven into most everything around us. Even tire companies use a false god for their logo. The griffin used by Peerless tires, is a legendary creature with the head and wings of an eagle, and the body, tail, and hind legs of a lion. As the eagle was considered the ‘king of the birds’, and the lion the ‘king of the beasts’, the griffin was perceived as a powerful and majestic creature.  During the Persian Empire, the griffin was seen as a protector from evil, witchcraft, and slander.

As Christians we just need to be clear to others about our beliefs, and when we say we will meet up on Saturday, it's not to worship the god of Saturn. He was a god of generation, dissolution, plenty, wealth, agriculture, periodic renewal and liberation. In later developments, he also came to be a god of time. The Romans named Saturday after their beloved god sometime before the 2nd century CE.

So to avoid Halloween because of its connections to cults, or evil spirits, or it's origin, to be fair you would need to stop using the terms, Monday, Tuesday, etc. and stop using many products sold in America to be consistent.

Just live your faith, praise the God of the Bible in word and in deed. People will know who you worship if your faith is part of your daily lives.
